rocket in various phases to the Moon, Soviet space station, for the students
of Moscow it is Lunik; it is Sputnik and Moon together.
And, on the seventh of October nineteen fifty-nine, a new "sea",
three hundred kilometres its diameter, this is the Sea of Moscow, on the
Bay of Astronauts.
In the southern hemisphere, the Lomonossov crater. And then the "Soviet"
chain and the Sea of Dream Sea. The one very similar to the other!
Fewer craters, fewer mountains, less rugged, signs of life. An intriguing
problem facing astronomers and geologists?
"A secret as ancient as the world they write, that of the other side
of the moon, which has been revealed to mankind today by Soviet scientists:
from today the photographs taken by the Soviet space station are available
to scientists and the public in all countries of the world".
And others: "One of the greatest achievements of technology, especially
radio electronics, which not only enabled the filming to be carried out,
but also the photographs to be developed and then transmitted to earth,
about half a million kilometres away".
The collective conscience does not record the conquests of science.
Life is already being shown on the screens of the becoming, drawing associative
confines, scattered in clusters, individual and alone in the Sea of Dream,
or planning cities and villages close to the Bay of Astronauts. The photographic
mark of technology burns the uncertainty of the not known and drives fantasy
to create reductions onto the concrete of possible potential.
Living where there is not yet life. Reproducing beyond the atmosphere.
In other non-terrestrial silences with differing immobilities.
Automatic inter-planetary station in orbit
for the other side, one thousand nine hundred and eighty-eight kilometres,
hurled at the sky, for a new, consecutive thrust towards the earth; filming
system and telemetric and television data for the first point of thrust,
at intervals, receiving, listening, orienting at the signal from earth.
Two lenses, two hundred and five hundred millimetre focal distance; one
eye for the whole, the other to identify the individual, the detail, at
the meeting after the perilune, at five o'clock Moscow time, on the sixth
of October, for forty minutes, thirty-five millimetre films.
The war is "cold", politics crackles,
dazzled by ideology, to reduce, circumscribe, give strength to nothingness,
to swell impotence and obscure dreams. Embraces between science and religion,
between Man and God fray in the West, unnerving false rubber questions
rebound, of all times, of the past.
The terracotta cylinders of Assurbanipal,
in Ninive, five thousand years ago, for King Etan, to climb the Moon.
From Cyrano de Bergerac to Jules Verne.
The nocturnal Leopardian chant to the "silent, solitary, timeless,
rare, pondering, candid, young immortal" and "charming, delightful
Moon".
For "our sister Moon" too.
At the end of the fifties, amid technology,
science, myth and poetry!
